One of the most famous lakes in Kerala, Periyar Lake, often also referred to as Thekkady Lake is an artificial lake, located in Thekkady, Kerala. When the longest river of Kerala, the Periyar River, was dammed in 1895, the Periyar lake was created artificially.
Spread across 26 square kilometers, the Mullaperiyar Dam formed the present-day Periyar Lake. Periyar Lake is situated in a protected area and contributes to plant, fowl, fish, and wildlife conservation.
