The Great Rann of Kutch is a large area of salt marshes located mostly in Gujarat (India) and the southern tip of Sindh ( Pakistan), divided into two main parts, the Great Rann of Kutch and Little Rann of Kutch. The great Rann (meaning “salt marsh”) of Kutch is located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, the western province of India.
One of the largest salt deserts in the world, The Great Rann is about 7500 square kilometers in area. The northern border of the Greater Rann forms the international border between India and Pakistan, heavily patrolled by the Border Security Force (BSF) of India.
Every year from December to February, the Government of Gujarat hosts a 3-month festival of Rann Utsav near Dhordo village. Cultural events such as camel shows, hot-air ballooning, handicrafts, camel cart tours, paramotoring, golf carts, and yoga are held at the Rann Utsav.
