One of the holiest places in Kolkata, Dakshineswar Kali Temple was built in 1855 by Rani Rashmoni, a philanthropist and devotee of Kali, situated on the eastern bank of the Hooghly River.
Dedicated to deity Bhavatarini, an aspect of Kali, the Dakshineswar Kali Temple is renowned for its connection with Ramakrishna, a mystic of 19th Century Bengal. Built-in the Navratna or Nine Spiers style of Bengal architecture, the sanctum sanctorum of the temple has an idol of Goddess Kali, known as Bhavatarini.
