Constructed in the 18th century during the reign of the Travancore Dynasty, the Vattakottai Fort (or ‘Circular Fort’), is one of the must-visit attractions of Tamil Nadu, located just about 7 kilometers north of Kanyakumari.
Made of granite blocks, the fort was constructed in the 18th century as a seaside defense-fortification and barracks in the former Travancore kingdom.
Protected under the Indian archaeological department, a fort’s major renovation was initiated recently by the department, and the site is now a famous tourist spot.
Spread over an area of 3.5 acres, the Vattakottai Fort has a panoramic view of both the sea on one side and the hill on the other (Western Ghats).
