One of the most prominent spiritual sites in the country, The Golden Temple is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar. The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib or Darbar Sahib is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism.
The Temple was built around the man-made pool, called Sarovar. In 1589, Guru Arjan, the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammad to lay its foundation stone. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib.
The Golden Temple became the center of the Singh Sabha movement between 1883 and 1920. The temple is a two-story structure with the top half covered in pure gold and the rest made of white marble, with precious color stones.
